ABRAM-VILLAGE – Bronson Banks turned in a 34-save effort in backstopping the Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings to a 3-1 victory over the Eastern Maniacs on Sunday night.
The Evangeline Recreation Centre was the site of the Island Junior Hockey League game, which was tied 1-1 after the first period. The Red Wings took a 2-1 advantage into the second intermission in what was a preview of a first-round playoff matchup.
Evan Millman’s first goal of the season with 17 seconds remaining in the opening period tied the game for the Red Wings. Connor Morrissey’s second-period marker proved to be the game-winner, and Chasse Gallant added an insurance marker with 1:24 remaining in the third period. Dawson McCormack, Cole Hackett, Jason Gallant, Alex Morrissey and Lucas Beaulieu set up the goals for Western, which improved its league-leading record to 23-8-2 (won-lost-overtime losses).
Alex Gallant, assisted by Hunter McIntyre and Mike MacGregor, netted the lone goal for Eastern (6-22-3).
Maniacs goaltender Noah Laybolt turned aside 31 of 34 shots.
The Red Wings are back in action on Tuesday as the second-place Sherwood-Parkdale Metros (18-15-1) travel to the Evangeline Recreation Centre. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
