Red Wings open IJHL regular season with impressive showing vs. Vipers

ABRAM-VILLAGE, P.E.I. — The Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings began pursuit of their fourth straight provincial championship on an impressive note Friday night.
The Red Wings posted a 4-0 victory while outshooting arch-rival Kensington Moase’s Plumbing and Heating Vipers 45-15 in the opening game of the 2019-20 Island Junior Hockey League regular season at the Evangeline Recreation Centre.
Veteran Luke Oliver earned the shutout while Ben Parent had a much busier evening in the Vipers’ goal. The Red Wings, who held period leads of 1-0 and 3-0, outshot the Vipers 11-4, 18-6 and 16-5 in each period.
Team captain Chandler Wood had a goal and two assists to lead the Wings while Austin Taylor and Isaac Knox each scored once and collected a single helper. Thomas Rennie also scored and Isaac Callaghan earned two assists.
League action resumes on Tuesday as the Vipers travel to Montague to take on the Hynes Paving Maniacs at 8 p.m. Wednesday, the Red Wings visit the Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros at the Cody Banks Arena in an 8 p.m. start.
