The UPEI Panthers forward was hooked by Saint Mary’s Huskies forward Bradley Latour and awarded a penalty shot.

Power beat former Charlottetown Islanders goalie Eric Brassard five-hole to break a scoreless tie and the Panthers held on for a 3-1 win Wednesday in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action.

“I always try that move in practice, halfway the time it doesn't work,” Power said. “I got him to bite there and open up and slid it in.”

It was a different feeling two minutes earlier, sitting in the sin bin after taking a hooking penalty of his own.

“0-0 game, you’re definitely really nervous,” said Power, a third-year Panther from St. John’s, N.L. “Then coming out of the box and get that (opportunity), can’t ask for much more.”

The Panthers controlled the play much of the night and had a barrage of shots in the first period, but were only able to hit the net nine times, despite four power-play chances.

“Even though we didn’t score on the power play, they build momentum for us,” said captain Brent Andrews, who was robbed at least twice in the first period by Brassard. “It’s times like that you want to get frustrated but I thought we played with a pretty good head.”

Kurt Etchegary, a rookie Panther from St. John’s, beat Brassard with a backhand shot from the slot 4:34 after Power’s goal and it proved to be the winner as Hunter Garlent scored for Saint Mary’s with 3:12 to play.

The Huskies continued pressing late, including a couple great chances by P.E.I. Rocket all-time leading scorer, Ben Duffy. Each time Matt Mahalak rose to the occasion.

“Matty has been amazing. He’s been great since the break,” said Andrews. “He’s been giving us a chance every night, saving our ass numerous times throughout that game.”

Nelson Armstrong iced the game with an empty-net goal.

Darcy Ashley had two assists while Power added one. Anthony Repaci and Aaron Berisha had assists for Saint Mary’s.

UPEI was 0-for-5 on the power play while Saint Mary’s was 0-for-3.

The Panthers have won three straight games to start the second half after ending the first semester on a seven-game losing streak.

The Panthers improved to 8-9-3 with Wednesday’s win and are tied with the Huskies (9-10-1) for fourth place in the conference with 19 points.

“We knew we were in last coming into the second half,” Power said. “We’ve been working hard and it’s been paying off.”

Andrews said the team would relish the win Wednesday night, but quickly turn the focus to two more key games this weekend. UPEI is on the road Friday at Acadia and Saturday at Saint Mary’s.
