SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Two players from P.E.I. will always remember their Maritime Junior Hockey League regular-season debuts.
Lucas Parsons and Matt Gordon scored for the Truro Bearcats in a 5-2 road loss to the defending-champion Yarmouth Mariners on Friday night.
The 16-year-old Parsons, who is from Stratford, found the back of the net at 6:39 of the second period to give the Bearcats a short-lived 2-1 lead. Yarmouth answered back with two goals in the next 50 seconds to take a 3-2 lead.
Parsons had 17 goals and 31 points in 33 regular-season games with the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild of the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League during the 2018-19 campaign.
The Bearcats selected Parsons, who is still midget-aged, in the second round, 18th overall, in June’s draft.
Gordon, an 18-year-old forward who previously played minor hockey in Pownal and grew up in Mermaid, scored in the final minute of the middle frame to cut Yarmouth’s lead to 4-2 entering the second intermission.
Gordon moved to Ontario three years ago. He is playing with the Bearcats as an affiliated player for the Cape Breton Eagles of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
