Muirhead continues hot streak in Caps’ win over Rapids

Charlottetown native has recorded 10 points in last three games

SUMMERSIDE – Kallum Muirhead continued his torrid scoring pace for the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals on Saturday night.
The Charlottetown native netted a hat trick to lead the Capitals to a 5-2 win over the Grand Falls Rapids in MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) action before 1,178 fans at Eastlink Arena.
Muirhead, who has recorded 10 points in his last three games, extended his point streak to five games. Muirhead moved into third place in the league scoring race with 27 points – 16 goals and 11 assists – in 15 regular-season contests.
Brodie MacArthur (1-1) and Conor MacEachern also scored for the Capitals, who improved their Eastlink North Division-leading record to 12-3-0 (won-lost-overtime losses). Sam Meisenheimer (3), TJ Shea (2), Cam Roberts and Calum MacPherson added assists.
Jean-Simon Belanger (1-1) and Ronan Rheaume replied for the Rapids (4-7-1).
The Rapids led 1-0 after the first period, but four unanswered goals in the middle frame sent the Caps into the second intermission ahead 4-1.
Overall, the Caps outshot the Rapids 43-33. Daniel Thompson earned the goaltending win over Andrew Rose.
The Caps had four affiliated players in Saturday’s lineup – forward Riley MacDougall of the Mount Academy Saints in Charlottetown, forward and captain Nick Reeves of the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride major midget team and Pride defencemen Hunter Bradley and Ed McNeill.
The game’s three stars were:
1. Kallum Muirhead (Capitals), 2. Sam Meisenheimer (Capitals), 3. Nick Reeves (Capitals).
The Caps’ next game is in New Glasgow, N.S., against the Pictou County Crushers on Thursday at 7 p.m.
