McKenna scores twice as Wildcats beat Islanders

Two points separates third from sixth in the Eastern Conference standings.

MONCTON, N.B. – Jeremy McKenna scored twice in a three-goal second period Sunday as the Moncton Wildcats defeated the Charlottetown Islanders 4-1 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League play.

The 19-year-old Summerside native has 29 goals and 67 points in 44 games this season.

The Wildcats led 1-0 after the first period and 4-1 heading to the third.

Jakob Pelletier and Mika Cyr also scored in the victory. Alexander Khovanov had three assists while singles went to Cornwall native Jordan Spence, Brady Pataki, Pelletier and Cyr.

Nikita Alexandrov scored a power play goal with Lukas Cormier and Brett Budgell picking up the assists.

Francis Leclerc made 34 saves for the win while Matthew Welsh allowed four goals on 27 shots.

Moncton was 1-for-5 on the power play while Charlottetown went 1-for-3. The Wildcats also won the faceoff (43-33) and hits (18-6) categories.

The Wildcats improved to 26-14-1-2 while the Islanders are 25-12-2-2. Two points separates third from sixth in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Islanders hit the road this week for their longest Quebec trip of the season. It includes stops in Quebec on Thursday, Rouyn-Noranda on Saturday and Val-d’Or on Sunday.
