SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Eastern Maniacs opened a home-and-home series with the Island Junior Hockey League-leading Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings in dramatic fashion Saturday night.
Ed Jenkins and Andrew Campbell scored in the shootout to give the Maniacs a 6-5 win at the Eastern Kings Sportsplex in Souris. The two teams will renew acquaintances at the Evangeline Recreation Centre in Abram-Village on Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
Cameron Nelson (2), Jenkins, Jacob MacEachern and Nick Steele scored in regulation time for the Maniacs, who improved to 2-21-0 (won-lost-overtime losses). Campbell (2), Jason Poley (2), Mike MacGregor, Kyle Martin, Sammy Docherty and Chris Sear chipped in with assists.
Calvin McRae (1-2), Austin Taylor (1-2), Brydon Smith (1-1), Alex Morrissey and Isaac Knox answered for the Red Wings (22-3-2). Single helpers came off the sticks of Matt Thompson, Silas Handrahan, Isaac Callaghan and Lucas Beaulieu.
The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, and 2-2 at the end of two.
The shots-on-goal totals were even at 32 through regulation and overtime. Cam Duffy was the winning goaltender, and Luke Oliver was between the pipes for Western.
