SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Head coach Gardiner MacDougall is the first to admit the key to the UNB Reds’ success is surrounding yourself with quality people.
Along with the Bedeque native, three other individuals with close ties to P.E.I. played key roles with the 2018-19 Atlantic University Sport Men’s Hockey Conference and University Sports national champions. Kinkora’s Charlie Cameron is an assistant coach, forward Stephen Anderson of Morell just completed his fourth season and former UPEI head coach Dylan Taylor is head scout in charge of recruitment.
Cameron and Anderson both played junior A hockey with the Summerside Western Capitals.
MacDougall offered comments on Anderson, Cameron and Taylor:
Stephen Anderson: “He’s had a phenomenal career at UNB. Every year he has gotten better. He had a career-best year this year in points (33 in 30 regular-season games), and has become one of the top players, not only in our team, but in the AUS.”
Charlie Cameron: “He has been phenomenal. We have a coaching staff of five. Charlie has been with us the last four years, and he’s in charge of our faceoffs with our centremen. He was a centremen and we were over 60 per cent at the nationals, which is phenomenal. He is low key, but he has really made a difference, especially this year, with our team.”
Dylan Taylor: “He’s a big part of it. He came out to the nationals, and is a guy who does an unbelievable job identifying the type of players, and type of people who relish the opportunity at UNB to get better. He’s been with us for 10 years now or so, and he’s a foundational key to our program for sure.”
