CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Charlottetown Islanders comeback fell short Saturday at the Eastlink Centre.
The Isles fell behind the Sherbrooke Phoenix 5-0 early in the third period, fought back but ran out of time in a 6-4 loss in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.
Dakota Lund-Cornish made 37 saves in beating his former team while Matthew Welsh allowed six goals on 22 shots in front of a crowd of 2,729 people.
Alex-Olivier Voyer and Felix Robert each had a goal and two assists while Oliver Okuliar had three helpers in the victory.
Samuel Poulin and Bobby Dow each had a goal and assist for Sherbrooke while Ryan DaSilva and Jaxon Bellamy also scored. Patrick Guay had two assists while Jeremy Jacques added one.
Defencemen Hunter Drew and Lukas Cormier each had a goal and an assist for the Islanders while Brett Budgell and Thomas Casey also scored.
Nikita Alexandrov had two assists while Daniel Hardie, Will Sirman, Colin Van Den Hurk and Zachary Beauregard each had one.
The Phoenix, which held 2-0 and 4-0 period leads, went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Islanders was 1-for-7.
Sherbrooke improved to 28-20-1-1 while Charlottetown is 29-15-2-3.
The Islanders travel to Halifax Wednesday to play the Mooseheads at 7 p.m. before hosting the return of former captain Pierre-Olivier (P.O.) Joseph and his Drummondville Voltigeurs Friday at 7:30 p.m.
