CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Charlottetown’s Kameron Kielly had a goal and three assists Wednesday to lead the UPEI Panthers to their first win of the Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey season.
Gabe Guertler added two goals and an assist as the Panthers defeated the Moncton Aigles Bleus 6-5 at MacLauchlan Arena. The Panthers improved to 1-2-0 while Aigles Bleus are 2-2-0.
Troy Lajuenesse, Sam Aulie and Riley Whittingham also scored in the win. Cody Payne had two assists while singles went to Owen Headrick, Doug Blaisdell, Olivier Arseneau, Nick Shumlanski and Beau McCue.
Maxime St-Cyr and Marc-Anthony Therrien had a goal and two assists to pace the Moncton attack while Robbie Graham and Danick Crete each had a goal and an assist and Alexis Roy rounded out the scoring.
Simon Hofley made 19 saves for the win while Alexi Thibaudeau allowed five goals on 16 shots in 26:39 in taking the loss. Jason Rioux stopped 11 of 12 shots he faced in relief.
The Panthers led 4-1 after the first period but took a 5-4 lead to the third. Kielly scored three minutes in to the final frame but Graham brought the visitors back within one three minutes later.
UPEI was 2-for-6 on the power play while Moncton was 1-for-3. The Panthers host the UNB Varsity Reds Saturday at 7 p.m.
