SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Jordan Spence of Cornwall set a Moncton Wildcats’ franchise record on Sunday.
The 17-year-old Spence earned an assist in a 4-3 loss to the visiting Baie-Comeau Drakkar to become the highest-scoring rookie defenceman in the history of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team. Spence, who has three goals and 36 assists for 39 points, broke Dan Milan’s previous record of 38 points set in the 2010-11 season.
The right-handed-shooting Spence recorded 52 points – 13 goals and 39 assists – in 50 regular-season games while playing junior A as a 16-year-old with the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals last season.
Spence, who was named the overall rookie of the year in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League), also led the league in assists for a defenceman and was named to the league’s rookie all-star team.
Spence played the 2016-17 season with the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride of the New Brunswick/P.E.I. Major Midget Hockey League, and prior to that played with the Mid-Isle Matrix of the P.E.I. Major Bantam AAA Hockey League.
Second star
Wildcats forward Jeremy McKenna of Summerside scored twice and was named the game’s second star against Baie-Comeau.
McKenna has 32 goals and 41 assists for 73 points in 49 regular-season games.
