Islanders lose pre-season opener to Saint John

QUISPAMSIS, N.B. —

The Saint John Sea Dogs used a four-goal second period to defeat the Charlottetown Islanders 6-3 Sunday in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams’ first games of the pre-season.

Alexis Belisle, a 17-year-old right-winger from Saint-Eustache, Que., scored twice in the win in Quispamsis, N.B.

Defenceman Connor McCluskey, who attended the Isles’ camp a year ago, had a goal and two assists while Joshua Roy, the first overall pick in June’s draft, had two helpers.

Charles Savoie (1-1), Charles-Antoine Dumont and Carter McCluskey also scored for the host squad, which dressed a more experienced lineup.

Justin Gill, one of the Islanders’ two second round picks, free agent invites Cameron Brown and Charles-Olivier Nadeau scored for the visitors. Luke Akerman, William Trudeau, Anthony Hamel, Dell Welton and Michael Horth had the assists.

Stewart Bagnell made 10 saves on 11 shots for the win while Justin Pace stopped nine of 11 shots he faced in the second half of the game.

Isaak Pelletier allowed five goals on 20 shots in 30:50 while Nolan Boyd turned aside 18 of 19 shots he saw.

Charlottetown was 1-for-4 on the power play and killed both of the Sea Dogs’ chances with the man advantage.

The Islanders host Moncton Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the APM Centre in Cornwall.

• Charlottetown’s Jacob Squires had an assist in Rouyn-Noranda’s 5-4 overtime win over Val-d’Or.

• Tyler Caseley of Spring Valley stopped 12 of 13 shots he faced in 28:41 in Halifax’s 3-1 loss to the recently renamed Cape Breton Eagles.
