The penguin must have been good luck. As 13-year-old Alyssa Gillis and a friend waited on the fifth hole on Highwood’s Mountainview Nine, the juniors peeled off penguin stickers to decorate their golf balls. When the green was clear, the birds took flight, and Gillis’ landed right on target. She smoothed an eight-iron from 112 yards away for the ace. What a shot, and what a story!
June was a big month for Nathan White. A couple weeks before his 16th birthday, White notched a hole-in-one on No. 15 at McKenzie Meadows, thumping an eight-iron across the water from 196 yards out.
Don Rausch has been digging divots for nearly 60 years and finally has an ace to brag about. Rausch was perfect with a pitching wedge on No. 14 at Speargrass, which spans 114 yards.
The members at Pinebrook are still learning the breaks on their redesigned greens, but Tracy McNulty has apparently figured out the line on No. 11. McNulty slugged her trusty seven-wood and was right on the money from 128 yards out.
Last week, we told you about an ace at Kananaskis Country that was captured on video. Well, Quainton John’s foursome had the right idea on No. 16 on the Mount Kidd Course … except that they recorded every shot except his. Too bad, because John hit a beauty — a flawless four-iron from 186 yards away for the hole-in-one.
Hole 13 at Douglasdale proved lucky for Lloyd Eriksson, who scribbled a ‘1’ on his scorecard after a nifty nine-iron that covered 111 yards.
Ask Cade Lusar about his favourite hole at brand-new Mickelson National, and it’s gotta be No. 15. Lusar aced that 170-yard challenge with a sweet seven-iron.
Cooper Kiemele made short work of the ninth hole on Highwood’s Spitzee setup thanks to an awesome eight-iron from 86 yards out.
Gord Balas and Kris Farley were both one-and-done on No. 12 at Hamptons. Balas showed off outstanding aim with his eight-iron from 155 yards away, while Farley was precise with a pitching wedge from 161.
Randy James jugged his tee-shot on No. 15 at Willow Park, nailing a nine-iron from the 118-yard blocks.
Don Morrison made the second hole at Fox Hollow seem easy, completing that 125-yard task with one crack of a nine-iron.
Geoff Ewing and Daniel Viens can swap stories after both aced the fourth hole at McKenzie Meadows. Ewing swatted a nine-iron from 170 yards out, while Viens was swinging a seven-iron from that same distance.
Also at McKenzie Meadows, Kevin Roe was spot-on with his tee-shot on No. 17. Roe’s recipe for success was a five-iron from 158 yards away.
Ron Nobert didn’t need his putter on No. 13 at Turner Valley, instead finishing his business with one smack of a six-iron from 174 yards out.
Carl Timmer cruised through the fourth hole at Carnmoney, watching from 120 yards back as his tee-ball — struck with a 56-degree wedge — disappeared below ground level.
Ezio Sarvucci launched an eight-iron over the ravine on the fifth hole at Springbank Links and was spot-on from 138 yards away.
Ben Herman aced No. 15 on the Raven Course at Priddis Greens, finding the flag-stick with a nine-iron from 110 yards out, while Aidan Gieger was celebrating at the same spot the next day thanks to a gorgeous gap-wedge that travelled 124 yards.
