Gray shuts out Caps for second time in three games

Tigers returning home with a 2-1 series lead

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The ‘Tristan Gray Show’ continued on Thursday night.

Gray made 26 saves in backstopping the Campbellton Tigers to a 2-0 victory over the Summerside Western Capitals. The win gives the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastlink Division final series in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League). Game 4 is scheduled for the Campbellton Memorial Civic Centre on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Game 5 will be back in Summerside on Monday at 8 p.m.

Gray earned his second shutout in three games after a 33-save effort in Campbellton’s 2-0 win in Game 1. Overall, Gray has stopped 82 of 86 shots in the three games, including 23 of 27 in a 4-1 loss in Game 2. The Capitals scored a league-high 247 goals in 50 regular-season games.

Before 1,871 fans at Eastlink Arena, the game was scoreless until Francis Thibeault’s shot from the right point made its way through traffic with North Bedeque native Coleton Perry providing a screen in front of Caps goaltender Dominik Tmej to open the scoring at 9:05 of the third period.
The score remained 1-0 until Pascal Valcourt blocked a shot inside the Campbellton blue-line and sealed the win with an empty-net goal with eight seconds remaining. Both Campbellton goals were unassisted.

Tmej also played a strong game as he turned aside 27 of 28 shots directed his way, including multiple point-blank saves.
Referees Thane Arsenault and Travis Timmons called three minor penalties against each team.
The game’s three stars were:
1. Tristan Gray (Tigers), 2. Dominik Tmej (Caps), 3. Francis Thibeault (Tigers).
