NEW GLASGOW, N.S. – It was a big day for two Prince Edward Islanders in their rookie seasons in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) on Monday.
Evan Gallant of Abram-Village and Connor McGregor of Charlottetown each scored their first regular-season goals in games played as part of the annual MHL Showcase at the Pictou County Wellness Centre, which features all 12 teams playing games on Monday and Tuesday.
Gallant, who was named the game’s third star, scored the game’s final goal for the Pictou County Crushers in a 2-1 loss to the Grand Falls Rapids. The product of the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild major midget program has two points in eight games.

The Crushers meet the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Caps defeated the South Shore Lumberjacks 4-1 on Monday.
McGregor, who played his major midget hockey with the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride, opened the scoring against the Valley Wildcats. It was McGregor’s first point in eight regular-season games.

Caseley strong
Rookie goaltender Tyler Caseley of Kensington stopped 36 of 38 shots in backstopping the Yarmouth Mariners to a 5-2 decision over the Edmundston Blizzard.
The win improved Caseley’s record to 7-1 (won-lost), and he has a goals-against average of 2.04 and a .935 save percentage.
Jack DesRoches of Days Corner earned an assist for the Miramichi Timberwolves in a 3-1 loss to the Truro Bearcats. It was DesRoches’s first point in five regular-season games.
Also on Monday, Hunter McIntyre of Kilmuir collected an assist in the Amherst Ramblers’ 3-0 win over the Campbellton Tigers. McIntyre has two goals and an assist for three points in eight games.
