SYDNEY, N.S. — Darren Waterman was named the Cape Breton West Islanders most valuable player during the team’s annual awards banquet on Friday.

The captain finished the regular season with 23 goals and 17 assists for 40 points in 35 games. He also posted four goals and five assists for nine points in seven playoff games.

Forward Sam Grant was named the team’s top forward while Neil MacLean was the top defenceman. Matthew Raike was the playoff most valuable player and Dave Matthews was the top defensive player.

Goaltender Kenzie MacPhail was the rookie of the year while Dylan Chisholm took home the most improved player award and Luke Hadley was the unsung hero.

Defenceman Jason Johnson was given the Islanders’ coach’s award and also took home the Islanders scholarship award.
