SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Chicago Wolves struck first in the best-of-seven Calder Cup final series in the American Hockey League.
Nic Hague set up Stefan Matteau’s second goal of the game 5:30 into overtime to give the Wolves a 4-3 win over the Charlotte Checkers before 8,465 fans in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday night. The teams will play Game 2, also in Charlotte, on Sunday night.
Zach Whitecloud and Zac Leslie also scored for the Wolves, who trailed 3-1 after the opening period and rallied to tie the game 3-3 before the second intermission.
Overall, the Checkers held a slim 38-36 shots-on-goal advantage, but the Wolves outshot their hosts 4-1 in overtime. Winning goaltender was Oscar Dansk.
