MONTRÉAL, Que. — Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin made a bold offer sheet to restricted free-agent centre Sebastian Aho on Monday.
The Canadiens’ offer is a five-year deal worth a total of US$42.25 million with an $8.45 million annual salary-cap hit. But the majority of the money would come in signing bonuses.
TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reported that the deal includes an $11.3 million signing bonus in Year 1, a $9.87 million bonus in Year 2, a $6.95 million bonus in Year 3 and a $5.25 million bonus in Year 4 and 5.
The 21-year-old Aho posted 30-53-83 totals in 82 games last season with the Carolina Hurricanes and has signed the offer sheet the Canadiens presented to him.
The Hurricanes have seven days to match the offer. If they don’t, the Canadiens would get Aho and have to give Carolina a first-, a second- and a third-round draft pick. If the Hurricanes match the offer, they can’t trade Aho for a year.
