Campbell leading tourney in scoring

RED DEER, Alta. —

Captain Jack Campbell had three assists to lead Team P.E.I. to a 7-4 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador Thursday to finish ninth at the Canada Games boys’ hockey competition.

Newfoundland and Labrador led 2-0 after the first period and the game was tied 3-3 heading to the third. Newfoundland and Labrador scored 1:30 into the final frame, but Marshall Gallant tied it 4:18 in and Reid Vos tallied the winner with 12:26 to play.

Cameron MacLean, Max Chisholm and Donovan Arsenault each had a goal and an assist in the victory. Jacob Squires and Zach Biggar also scored while Josh Lund, Seth MacLeod and Alex Graham each had an assist.

Josh Smith made 28 saves for the win.

P.E.I. went 3-1 in preliminary round play with the lone loss coming 4-3 in overtime to Newfoundland and Labrador. They lost 15-1 to British Columbia in the qualifying round to fall back into the placement round where they defeated the Northwest Territories and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Campbell, a Souris native who plays for the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wilds major midgets, leads the tournament with 17 points, including 14 assists, with the medal games going today. Quebec and Ontario play for gold while Alberta and Saskatchewan are in the bronze medal match.

Team P.E.I. returns home on Saturday.
