Genie Bouchard’s recent success on European clay has earned her a wild-card spot in the main draw of the French Open, which begins Sept. 27 in Paris.

Bouchard reached the quarter-finals of the Prague Open and followed that with a run to the final of a WTA event in Istanbul, where she lost in three sets to Romanian Patricia Maria Tig.

Her performance in Istanbul, where she had to win two qualifying matches to reach the main draw, boosted her 105 places in the rankings to No. 167.

She will join 18-year-old Leylah Annie Fernandez of Laval in the main daw. Fernandez received a direct entry on the strength of her career-high ranking of 98. Bianca Andreescu is on the provisional entry list, but the 2019 U.S. Open champion is doubtful because of a foot injury. She hasn’t played since last October and withdrew from this week’s Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome.

Bouchard wasn’t entered in the Rome event, but it’s expected she will seek a wild-card in next week’s WTA stop in Strasbourg, where she reached her first WTA Tour semifinal in 2013.

Main draw play got underway in Rome on Monday and 16th-seeded Montrealer Félix Auger-Aliassime was an early casualty, losing 6-4, 7-5 to  Filip Krajinovic of Serbia. Krajinovic won 27 of his 30 first-serve points to ease past Auger-Aliassime in one hour and 42 minutes.

In another early upset, Norwegian Casper Ruud  created 17 break-point chances in a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over No. 11 seed Karen Khachanov of Russia.
