Action begins for P.E.I. hockey teams at the Monctonian tournament

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — MONCTON — Justin Gendron scored the winning goal eight minutes into the third period Thursday as Moncton topped Central Attack 5-3 at the Monctonian Challenge major bantam AAA tournament.

Brett Arsenault and Cam Squires each had a goal and an assist for Central.

Alex Koughan also scored for the Island squad while Thatcher Hughes picked up an assist.

In other action Thursday, Kyle MacIntyre’s goal seven minutes into the third period stood up as the winner as ACCEL Physio got by the Mid-Isle Matrix 3-1.

Grayson LaPorte netted Mid-Isle’s lone goal, assisted by Zack Langdale and Ryder Howatt.

In goal, Cole Desrosiers picked up the win while Tyler Rogers took the loss for the Matrix.

Thursday’s schedule also saw the Prince County Warriors taking on The Novas and Central Attack facing off against The Rangers.

On Friday, Prince County plays twice, taking on the Joneljim Cougars and Port City Sharks while Mid-Isle faces off against the Truro Bearcats. Central Attack plays the Wear Well Bombers.

In major midget play on Thursday, Nathan King scored the winning goal five minutes into the second period as the Western Kings edged the Charlottetown Bulk Carrier Knights 2-1.

Colby Huggan scored for Charlottetown, assisted by Max Chisholm and Jesse Blanchard.

The goaltenders were Lucas Park for the Kings and Jack Howatt for the Knights.

Meanwhile, Austin Arsenault, with the goal, and Landon Clow combined on the winning goal as the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild edged Rothesay Netherwood School 3-2.

Dixon MacLeod, from Reid Peardon, and Reid Vos, unassisted, also scored for the Wild.

Jonah Arbing tended nets for the Wild while Joe Chambers was in goal for Rothesay.

On Friday, Charlottetown meets OHA Gold at 10:30 a.m. while Kensington takes on Tri Pen Osprey at 3:30 p.m.

In minor midget AAA action, the Sherwood Drug Mart Central Attack will see the ice on Friday at 3:30 p.m. The Attack played twice on Thursday but scores were not available at press time.
