SLEMON PARK, P.E.I. — The Tignish Perry’s Construction Aces and Summerside Cover-All Construction Crunch earned victories in the Razzy’s P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League on Friday night.
The second-place Aces edged the league-leading Sherwood-Parkdale Metros 5-4 in overtime, and the Crunch downed the North River Flames 8-3. The Crunch and Flames will renew acquaintances again on Saturday at The Plex in Slemon Park, with the opening faceoff set for 7:15 p.m.
Aces 5 Metros 4 (OT)
At the Tignish Credit Union Arena, Brayden Handrahan set up Dawson Sellick with the game-winning goal with 2:52 remaining in overtime.
Curklan Fraser (2), Handrahan and Tyson Beckingham also scored for the Aces, who will take a 17-5-0 (won-lost-overtime losses) into Monday’s rematch with the Metros (18-3-2) at the Cody Banks Arena in Charlottetown at 7:20 p.m.
Shawn Corney (2), Marc Cummiskey and Ethan Larocque countered for the Metros. Nick Brown and Michael Jenkins each added a pair of assists.
The Aces built period leads of 1-0 and 4-0, but the Metros rallied for four unanswered goals in the third period to force overtime.
Winning goaltender Koby Bridges made 25 saves while Sumner Docherty stopped 28 shots for the Metros.
Crunch 8 Flames 3
At The Plex, Kolton Stright’s hat trick sparked the Crunch (7-15-0), who blew open a close game with five unanswered third-period goals. Brandon Hastings (1-3), Marc-Andre Gallant (1-1), Bret Cheverie, Ryan May and Brandon Arsenault also lit the lamp. Monty Desreux, Remi Arsenault and Cory Ramsay all contributed two assists.
Zac MacKay (2) and Drew Nelson (1-1) replied for the Flames (8-13-2). Tyler Jurkowski chipped in with a pair of helpers.
The Flames were in front 1-0 after the opening period, and the teams entered the second intermission tied 3-3.
Winning goaltender was Devon Newberry. The shots-on-goal totals were even 30-30.
