CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — After 25 years of working with different soccer groups across the country, Andy Cameron, a “soccer lifer”, is back on P.E.I.
He is working with Winsloe Charlottetown Royals F.C. (WCRFC) players and coaches as the club’s full-time technical director.
“I’ve heard good things about what they have been doing with their soccer programs and am excited to see what improvements we can make together,” he said.
Cameron, who was born in Halifax, but raised on Nova Scotia’s South Shore, moved to P.E.I. when he was 12 years old. He grew up playing soccer in the Charlottetown area, suiting up for the Colonel Gray Colonels and starring with the UPEI Panthers in their glory days of the mid-1980s. During this time, he was also a member of the national Olympic team program.
Cameron started his coaching career with the Panthers in the late 1980s and has had university coaching stints with Memorial University, UNB and the University of Northern British Columbia. He has also coached Canada Games teams in three different provinces and has been on the coaching staff of various national teams throughout his career.
Cameron was most recently the technical director for the South Shore District Soccer Association in Nova Scotia, where he oversaw the development of players and coaches for 10 soccer clubs in the district.
WCRFC officials are very excited to be able to bring Cameron on as a full-time technical director.
“Being able to hire someone with Andy’s soccer knowledge and experience to work with our club is an amazing opportunity,” says president Peter Howatt. “The club feels that we already provide an excellent product to our members, but with the addition of Andy it should really take our programs to another level.
“It is rare for a club of our size to be able to get a full-time technical director, but it is something that has always been on our technical staff’s radar. We are really looking forward to see what Andy and our technical staff can do with the club over the next few years.”
Another organization happy to see Cameron returning to the Island is the P.E.I. Soccer Association.
“Anytime you can bring another quality soccer person to P.E.I. to work with one of our clubs is a great thing,” says Jonathan Vos, the association’s technical director. “Andy has a wonderful soccer resumé, he will be a great asset for coaches and players at every level. We are fortunate to have someone with his knowledge and experience in our soccer community.”
