A total of 24 teams from across P.E.I. and Nova Scotia attended the three-day tournament. Eight teams in each age group – under-11 and under-13 – qualified for Sunday’s playoffs.
Under-11
In one of the most exciting games of the tournament, the hometown Travellers Home Centre Red Spartans beat the Valley Bulldogs 33-26 in a back-and-forth game that wasn’t decided until the final minute.
The Red Spartans, who went undefeated in the under-11 tournament and were the defending Spartans Bowl champions, reached the final with a tough 27-19 win over the Alberton Predators in one semifinal game. The Bulldogs got by the Summerside Green Spartans 26-18 in the other exciting semifinal.
The Bulldogs had only two losses all weekend, and those were at the hands of the Red Spartans.
In the bronze-medal game, the Predators beat the Green Spartans 37-12.
Under-13
The undefeated Valley Bulldogs won the under-13 championship with a close 13-6 win over the Charlottetown Privateers.
Charlottetown twice had the ball first and goal inside the Valley five-yard line, but could not score a second touchdown against a stubborn Bulldogs’ defence that came up with two critical goal-line stands.
The Privateers punched their ticket to the gold-medal game with an 18-0 win over the Valley Gators while the Bulldogs beat Tignish in the other semifinal.
The bronze-medal game was another close battle as the Gators came out victorious 26-19.
