Training camps underway for Summerside tackle football teams

SUMMERSIDE - Football is in the air as all three Summerside teams have hit the field with their respective training camps.

The opening games in varsity, bantam and atom are fast approaching, and the Summerside Spartans’ organization is very pleased to have a full complement of coaches, players and sponsors as they get ready for a busy 2017 season.

Cooke Insurance Varsity Clippers
The Clippers have 36 players on this season’s roster, and head coach John Turner is pleased with the camp to date. The team has 22 returning players from last season’s championship team, and Turner believes they will once again be very competitive in the four-team league. 
The Clippers open the season in Cornwall against the Timberwolves on Friday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m.

Waterwise Bantam Spartans
The Spartans are looking to win their fifth straight P.E.I. Bantam Tackle Football League championship under new head coach Logan Plant. 
This year’s team has 20 returning players on their 30-man roster.
Plant is very pleased with the camp to date, and there are a number of pleasant surprises who will suit up for the Spartans this season. 
Summerside’s first game is in Cornwall on Sept. 15 at 6 p.m.
 
Cox & Palmer Atom Spartans
Once again there will be two atom teams in Summerside – the Green Spartans and White Spartans. 
This season, the Charlottetown Privateers and Cornwall are joining the league the two Summerside entries to set up a four-team P.E.I. league. 
Rob Connell and Jamie Palmer coach the Green Spartans while Ken Blood and John MacKinnon are the coaches of the White Spartans. Both coaching staffs are excited about their football teams. 
The season starts off with a football jamboree for all four teams at Eric Johnston Field in Summerside on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m.
