Summerside clubs successfully defended their bantam and varsity Papa John’s P.E.I. Tackle Football League titles on a cold, windy rain-swept Friday night in Charlottetown.
First, the Waterwise Spartans outlasted the Cornwall Timberwolves 19-1 for its fourth straight bantam title in the Hilton Bowl.
Then the varsity Cooke Insurance Clippers downed the Timberwolves 32-1 for back-to-back Potato Bowls.

Second-year quarterback Camren Gavin lit up the Timberwolves defence for three touchdown passes, including two of more than 50 yards, and the defence led by linebacker John Rose stymied Cornwall’s offence in defence of its 2015 crown.
Despite the rain and wind, Gavin, 17, took advantage of a lull in the weather and tossed TD passes to Owen Turner, Parker Cameron and Cameron Paynter and gave the Clippers a 19-1 lead going in the halftime.
“In the second quarter, the wind and rain really died down and we punched in three of our touchdowns. In the third, it picked back up so we kept it on the ground and it worked,” said Gavin, named the offensive player of the game. “It’s surreal right now. So happy we won.”
Cornwall had chances and moved the ball on the Clippers defence, but too many times fumbled away opportunities or received penalties that eliminated good field position and a penalty took a made field goal off the board in the third quarter. The second attempt following the penalty failed and Cornwall came away from the drive empty-handed.
Cameron added a TD run in the fourth quarter and Liam Kerwin’s late-game pick-six and an extra point rounded out the Clippers scoring.
Rose was named defensive player of the game.

Summerside outlasted Cornwall in a tight defensive struggle, the only TDs coming off an Ethan Lawless 65-yard reverse play in the first quarter and a Braydon Lawless scoring run with 2:50 left in the fourth quarter.
A scoreless second period featured a Summerside touchdown called back for a holding penalty, Cornwall’s missed opportunity to score after a long punt return by Colin Walsh, a Summerside sack and Cornwall fumble recovered by the Spartans.
Ethan Lawless’ bolt along the sideline to the Timberwolves end zone proved the game-winning score as the Spartans defence held and bought it another crown.
“It was a crazy experience. A lot of fun. It was amazing going down the field, the lights on, everyone chasing you,” said 17-year-old rookie Ethan Lawless of his first title. “We put in a lot of work this season. Practices every Monday and Wednesday, a lot of commitment. We won it as a team.”
Braydon Lawless was named the offensive player of the game, while Joseph Bertram earned the defensive player of the game.
