Lake Louise

It has been an absolutely incredible start of the season at Lake Louise, where heavy snowfall has allowed the resort to already open all its lifts — they had 103 runs open on Wednesday. They got hit with 45 cm of snow in the past seven days alone, and that’s brought the season total to 208 cm while making for fantastic pre-holiday season conditions. The resort is getting in the festive spirit, too. Santa Claus will be on the mountain on Dec. 21 and 22, and there are opportunities to snowshoe with the big guy on Christmas Day. There’s a Christmas Feast planned for the night before.

Sunshine

They’re going all-out at Sunshine this year for the holiday season. There’s really something for everybody. Santa Claus will be on the hill for the next couple weekends, and anyone who shows up on Christmas Day dressed as either Santa or Mrs. Claus can ski for free — last year there were around 150 Santas who took advantage. There’s also an ongoing fundraiser where anybody who brings a non-perishable food item to the mountain gets a $5 voucher, and all the food that’s collected goes to the Bow Valley or Calgary food banks. Sunshine got hit by 44 cm of snow in the past week and that brought the season total to 204 cm.

Norquay

Circle next Wednesday on your calendars, because that’s when the first Cool2Carpool day of the season goes down at Mount Norquay. The monthly event provides one of the best deals in the Rockies, as skiers and snowboarders who split a ride also split the $89 per carload price for lift tickets. That means if you get four people in a car, each person is paying roughly $22.50 for a lift ticket. Norquay’s been hit with 32 cm of snow in the past seven days and 154 cm so far this winter.

COP

Every skier could probably use a couple lessons at the start of the season to sharpen their skills. That’s especially true for kids, and Canada Olympic Park offers a wide variety of lessons for just about every type of alpine enthusiast, whether you’re learning the basics or trying to take your skills to the next level. Winsport will be running lessons all through the holiday season, giving young skiers and snowboarders the chance to keep learning, even if they’re not in school.

Kicking Horse

The season officially kicked off this past weekend at Kicking Horse, and the snow gods celebrated with a healthy dump of fresh powder at the Golden, B.C. resort. Kicking Horse got pounded by 46 cm of new snow in the past seven days, and that’s brought the season total to 258 cm. That’s perfect for what promises to be a busy holiday season. Santa Claus will be visiting the mountain on Dec. 21 and 22, and there’s a New Year’s Eve banquet at Eagle’s Eye Restaurant, along with a whole evening of family-friendly celebrations in the plaza.

Panorama

They don’t mess around at Panorama around the Christmas season. They go big. This year, the Invermere, B.C. resort is promising a packed schedule of family-friendly events that will include gingerbread house building, meals, movie nights and skating, among many other things. The resort has been hit with 6 cm of new snow in the past week and 105 cm so far this season.

Marmot Basin

The good people at Marmot Basin must have done something to make the snow gods very happy because they’ve been blessed with some serious powder. In the last eight days, Marmot was slammed by 48 cm, bringing the season total to 168 cm. If you’re planning on visiting Marmot Basin this winter, it would be crazy not to buy a Marmot Escape Card, which offers discounts on every single day you spend on the mountain, as well as on equipment rentals, accommodations in Jasper and even food and drinks.

Fernie

If you’re looking for something unique to do this New Year’s Eve, Fernie has you covered. To be fair, the resort has a jam-packed calendar of events throughout the holiday season that are worth checking out, but Fernie will also be hosting free family activities from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the base area and will be putting on a fireworks show right after. Heavy snowfall over the past week has meant that a big chunk of the resort is now open, and the 54 cm that fell brought the season total to 180 cm.

Castle Mountain

It seems that they’ve been dealing with blizzard after blizzard this winter. After getting hit with 32 cm of the fluffy white stuff in the past week, the season total now sits at an absurd 349 cm at mid-mountain. The best way to take advantage of everything the season has to offer might be the Wonders of Winter Card. For $79.95, the card gets guests 50% off unlimited days at Castle and Marmot Basin, as well as 50% off five days as the Pass Powderkeg Ski Area in Crowsnest Pass.

Kimberley

If you’re looking to regularly switch-up where you ski or snowboard this season, there’s probably no better way to do it than by buying an RCR Rockies Card. For only $114.96, the card gets you on one of Kimberley, Kicking Horse, Fernie or Nakiska for free on your first, fourth and seventh visits, while providing big discounts on your other trips to the mountains. Kimberley is set to finally open its doors and kick off the season on Saturday.

Revelstoke

To the surprise of absolutely no one, it’s been snowing like crazy at Revelstoke. The B.C. resort has been pounded by powder over the past seven days, with the 41 cm of snow that fell bringing the season total to an awesome 305 cm. That’s the sort of snow that keeps skiers and snowboarders coming back again and again. If that’s your reality, it’s worth investing in a Vertical Card. Even a one-day card saves guests $30 on lift tickets, but the more days you ski or ride, the more you save.

Whitefish

Our friends to the south at Montana’s Whitefish Mountain Resort — voted the third best ski area in North American by readers of Ski Magazine this year — will be opening this weekend with skiing and snowboarding on the north side of the mountain and limited beginner terrain. The price of a daily ticket will be reduced, too, meaning guests can get some early-season runs in for cheap.
