SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Summerside Cooke Insurance Clippers started off the 2019 P.E.I. Varsity Tackle Football League season with a bang Friday night.
Running back Colin Goodwin ran 60 yards for a touchdown on the game’s first offensive possession after the opening kickoff to stake the Clippers to an early lead en route to a 51-0 win over the Souris Wildcats at Eric Johnston Field.
The Clippers’ defence stepped up immediately after the opening score, and Finn Turner tackled a Souris player in the end zone for a safety. Summerside went on to dominate the first half on quarterback Nic Gunning’s two-yard run, a 25-yard pass to Kyle Cameron and a five-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Turner for a 30-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Gunning had a 35-yard scoring run and five-yard touchdown pass to tight end Alex Campbell.
The Clippers’ defence, which dominated all night, capped the scoring off on a 55-yard fumble return by corner Spencer Rossiter.
The Clippers’ next game is on the road Saturday against the Cornwall Timberwolves at 8 p.m.
