CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The Summerside Cooke Insurance Clippers clinched first place in the Papa John’s P.E.I. Varsity Tackle Football League with a 43-7 win over the host Charlottetown Privateers on Sunday afternoon.
The Clippers and Cornwall Timberwolves finished the regular season with identical records of 5-1 (won-lost). Summerside, however, held the tiebreaker for the top spot.
The Clippers will host the Souris Wildcats (0-6) in a semifinal game at Eric Johnston Field on Friday. The opening kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
Three touchdowns
In Charlottetown, Charlie Turner’s three-touchdown performance led the Clippers against the Privateers. Turner scored a major on a five-yard run and hooked up with quarterback Nic Gunning for 55- and seven-yard scores.
Mike Friesen and Kyle Cameron added running and receiving touchdowns, respectively, while linebacker Breton Brown added a pick-six for the Clippers.
Bantams
In bantam action in Charlottetown, the host Privateers beat the Waterwise Spartans 46-6 while the Cox and Palmer Atom Spartans clinched first place with a 21-14 win over the Privateers.
The Spartans will host the Cornwall Timberwolves (0-6) at Eric Johnston Field in a bantam semifinal on Friday at 6 p.m.
