The Titans beat the Spartans 39-9 in the final regular-season game that decided first place in the Moncton Atom Football League.

Summerside will now focus on its semifinal game against the Moncton Blue Bombers at Rocky Stone Field in Moncton on Sunday. Game time is 12:30 p.m.

The Spartans edged the Blue Bombers 9-7 in the first week of the season, and expect a real tough game on Sunday.

“The Blue Bombers have a big physical team, and it will come down to one or two plays and the team who makes those couple of plays will be in the championship game,” said Spartans head coach John Turner.

Opening drive

At Eric Johnston Field in Summerside, Sackville scored on its opening drive of the game, and never looked back as the Spartans had a tough day both offensively and defensively.

“They have a great program over there, and they really executed both offensively and defensively today (Sunday),” said Turner. “Our players had trouble with their blocking assignments, and we missed a lot of tackles on the defence. If you make mistakes like that against a team like Sackville, they will make you pay.

“We need a good week of practice and our guys will regroup.”

After Sackville took a 20-0 lead on their first three offensive possessions, the Spartans narrowed the gap to 20-9 on a nice 75-yard touchdown run by quarterback Connor Keough and along with his convert gave the team some short-lived momentum.

However, Sackville scored a passing touchdown on fourth down on the last play of the half that really changed the game and gave them the Titans a commanding 29-9 lead.

“If we get a stop on fourth down, we are only down eleven and we get the ball to start the second half, we could make a game of it,” added Turner.

The Spartans could not do much offensively in the second half while the Titans added another touchdown.
