Long first day of curling for two women’s teams
ALBERTON -- It will be Veronica Smith and her team from the Cornwall Curling Complex who will face Melissa Morrow and her Silver Fox Curling Club rink in the “A” Qualifier of the P.E.I. Scotties provincial women’s curling championship.
Smith downed the Sarah Fullerton team from the Charlottetown and Silver Fox clubs 7-5 Wednesday night at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.Read about Morrow's results here
It was the end of a very long day for the two teams who played in the opening draw at 9 a.m. and then waited through storm delays before meeting each other in Draw 3 at 9 p.m.
Smith and Morrow will meet in the 'A' Qualifier Thursday at 2 p.m. That’s not the end of it, though. They then drop into the next section to compete towards the 'B' and ultimately the 'C' qualifiers of the modified tripe knock-out championship. Seven teams are in the running for the provincial title and the trip to the Canadian championships in Sydney, NS, next month.
Smith, who started the day off with just three curlers, because her second stone went down with the flu, scored one with hammer in the first end against Fullerton.
Fullerton went up 2-1 after four ends before Smith rebounded with one in the fifth and a stolen deuce after the break. Fullerton cut the lead to 4-3 in the seventh and then the teams traded deuces over the next two ends, leaving Smith with hammer heading home and clinging to a 6-5 lead.
Because of the late start to the third draw, organizers of the Scotties and Men’s Tankard, which are being held together in Alberton, have delayed the fourth draw until 10 a.m. Thursday. The schedule is expected to be back to normal by the afternoon draw.
