P.E.I.’s run ends at Scotties Tournament of Hearts

Birt rink drops two one-point decisions on Friday

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. —

P.E.I.’s run at the 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts came to an end on Friday night

The Mitchell O’Shea-coached Suzanne Birt rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex, which includes third stone Marie Christianson, second stone Meaghan Hughes and lead Michelle McQuaid, dropped two one-point decisions on the final day of the championship round to complete play 6-5 (won-lost). Birt lost 7-6 in an extra end to Ontario’s Rachel Homan (8-3) in the afternoon draw, and Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville (8-3) also edged P.E.I. 7-6 in the evening draw.

The 16 teams were divided into two eight-team pools for the start of play on Feb. 16. After the teams played a round robin within their pool, the top four from each division advanced to the championship round on Thursday and Friday. The top four teams from the championship round will compete in the Page playoff system on Saturday and Sunday.

Ontario and Northern Ontario will play an elimination game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., and Alberta’s Chelsea Carey (9-2) and Saskatchewan’s Robyn Silvernagle (8-3) will play in the 1-2 game on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that game will advance directly to Sunday’s final at 6 p.m., and the losing rink will face the winner of Ontario and Northern Ontario in a semifinal game Sunday at noon.
