The Jamie Newson rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club is the 2018 Travelers P.E.I. Curling Club champion.
Newson and his rink of Adam Arsenault, lead; Patrick Ramsay, second and third Corey Miller, downed the Alan Inman rink from Crapaud 5-3 Monday afternoon in the championship final. Newson stole three singles en route to the provincial title.
Inman scored four in the extra end with hammer in the morning’s semi-final at the Montague Curling Club to eliminate the Daryl MacDonald rink from Western Community Curling Club, 9-5.
Newson and MacDonald had finished round robin play with 5-1 records, but Newson was awarded first place because of his round-robin win against the Western club. Inman had finished round robin play with a 4-2 summary.
All seven curling rinks had a club representative in the men’s round robin while six of the clubs were represented in the women’s event.
The women’s championship is still far from decided. The Monday morning and afternoon draws were tie-breakers to see who would occupy third place for the 6 p.m. semi-final against the host team from Montague, the Tammy Dewar rink who finished second in round robin with a 3-2 summary. Three teams had tied for third with 2-3 summaries.
Debbie Rhodenhizer from Cornwall won the morning tie-breaker, 9-2 over Sharon Horne from Western and stole the afternoon tie-breaker against Crapaud’s Amanda Holm. She tied the game with three in the seventh and stole a point in the eighth for a 7-6 victory. Those wins give Rhodenhizer third place and sends her into the 6 p.m. semi-final against Dewar.
Waiting for the semi-final winner was the Melissa Morrow rink from the Silver Fox. They finished first with a 5-0 record. They play the semi-final winner Tuesday at 10 a.m. When a team goes through round robin play undefeated, the Travelers rules gives that team a second life. What that means is the Morrow rink can take the championship with a win Tuesday morning, but if they lose, they get to play the semi-finalist again at 2 p.m. Tuesday in a winner-take-all final.
