The Summerside Recreational Volleyball League, in conjunction with the City of Summerside, is hosting the 15th annual Lobster-Fest beach volleyball tournament this weekend
Play in the popular event begins Friday evening and wraps up on Championship Sunday. All matches are taking place on the grounds of Credit Union Place.
"We've now got 10 volleyball courts set up for the 96 teams that have registered for play this weekend," said event organizer Aaron Doyle. "Curran and Briggs dropped off over 600 tonnes of beach sand earlier this week. . . It all gets repurposed on the downtown waterfront following the tournament."
Those participating will chase after over $4,000 in cash and prizes. Divisions are set up for men, women and co-ed at competitive, recreational and corporate levels of competition. Players are coming in from all over the Maritimes, including lots of local talent, and there's one participant flying in from Vancouver, B.C.
"We encourage the public to come on out and watch," said Doyle. "These players have a lot of fun and they put on a great show - plus it's free admission and free parking all weekend long."
Organizers estimate the event will generate about $250,000 in economic activity for the Summerside and surrounding areas.
