Cape Breton hockey teams participating in Monctonian Challenge

SYDNEY, N.S. — Five Cape Breton hockey teams will take part in the annual Monctonian Challenge this week in Moncton.

In major midget action, the Sydney Mitsubishi Rush and Cape Breton West Islanders are scheduled to play in the four-day tournament.

The Rush open their tournament against the Commandeurs du College de Levis of Quebec Thursday at 3:45 p.m., before playing the Halifax McDonalds at 12:15 p.m. on Friday. The club will wrap up the round robin Saturday at 9 a.m. against the York-Simcoe Express on Ontario.

As for the Islanders, they begin the event Thursday at 1:45 p.m. against Tri-Pen Osprey of Newfoundland and Labrador. The will also play Friday at 1:45 p.m. against the Rothesay Netherwood School of New Brunswick, and Saturday at 8:45 a.m. against the Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild of P.E.I.

In the minor midget division, the Cape Breton Jets and Cabot Highlanders will be in the tournament.

The Jets kick off the tournament Thursday at 1:45 p.m. against the Sherwood Drug Mart Central Attack of P.E.I., before challenging the Basin Armada of Bedford at 8:45 p.m. The club's final round-robin game is Friday at 3:45 p.m. against the Admirals of St. Margarets Bay.

The Port Hawkesbury-based Highlanders will face the Valley Wildcats Thursday at 6:30 p.m. They will also play the Chirocare Kings of Sackville Friday at 10:30 a.m., before battling the Pennecon Eastern Flyers of Newfoundland and Labrador at 9 p.m.

In major bantam action, the North Sydney-based Joneljim Cougars are registered for the tournament.

The Cougars begin the event Thursday at 12:15 p.m. against the Port City Sharks of Saint John, N.B. The team will also play Friday when they face the Prince County Warriors of P.E.I at 8:30 a.m., and The Novas of Antigonish at 4:15 p.m.

The remainder of the teams schedule will be determined following the round-robin.
