RED DEER, Alta. — Team P.E.I. took part in the opening ceremonies of the Canada Games Friday in Red Deer, Alta.

Charlottetown gymnast Cameron Davis was the Island's flag-bearer for the opening ceremonies.

The opening ceremonies included performances by Canadian country singer Brett Kissel.

The Island contingent for Week 1 includes boys' hockey, ringette, speed skating, biathlon, table tennis and gymnastics.

Team P.E.I. departed Charlottetown on Thursday and began play today.

The Games have connected many families of Islanders since the Games began in February 1967 in Quebec City with 1,800 athletes participating from 10 provinces and two territories in 15 events. It is now the largest multi-sport competition in Canada for young athletes.
