Big week for Judo P.E.I. athletes

Islanders win four medals at Ontario Open; invitations received for elite national championships

MIDDLETON – It has been a big week for Judo P.E.I. athletes.
Not only did the provincial team perform well at the Ontario Open in Toronto last weekend, but five team members earned invitations to participate in Judo Canada’s 2018 elite national championships in Montreal on Jan. 13 and 14.

 


Four P.E.I. athletes won medals at the Ontario Open international tournament, with the breakdown of one gold, two silvers and one bronze.
George Madumba of Summerside won gold in under-18 male -90 kilograms.
Sebastian Nash of Middleton, in under-18 male -90 kilograms, and Jenna Condra of Summerside, in under-14 female -40 kilograms, took home silver medals.
Mikey Perry of Brackley Beach earned a bronze medal in under-16 male -42 kilograms.

Following a great showing at the Quebec Open in Montreal the previous weekend, 50 per cent of Judo P.E.I. athletes attending the Ontario Open made it to the podium.
The Ontario Open was the final qualifier for the elite national championships, which will bring together the top eight male and female judokas in each category from nine provinces and territories for a total of almost 200 athletes.
Athletes qualified by accumulating points from Jan. 1 to Nov. 11 of this year at the Saskatchewan Open, Pacific International, Edmonton National, Eastern Canadian championships, national championships, Quebec Open and Ontario Open.

P.E.I. athletes
The following Team P.E.I. athletes received invitations to the elite championships:
George Madumba – Ranked No. 1 in under-18 male -90 kilograms.
Sebastian Nash – Ranked No. 2 in under-18 male -90 kilograms.
Ellen Gillis – Ranked No. 6 in under-18 female +70 kilograms.
Karlyn Shea – Ranked No. 5 in under-18 -70 kilograms.
Mikey Perry – Ranked No. 7 in under-18 -56 kilograms.
Brandon Bernard – Selected as 11th alternate for senior men +100 kilograms.
