Edwards heats up to lead Arizona State over Utah

Rob Edwards had a season-high 24 points and tied a career high with five 3-pointers in his return to the starting lineup as host Arizona State beat struggling Utah 83-64 in a Pac-12 game Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.

Remy Martin had 20 points and six assists, while Taeshon Cherry had 11 points and five rebounds for the Sun Devils (11-7, 2-3 Pac-12), who shot 51.7 percent from the field, including 11 of 18 3-pointers. They never trailed.

Timmy Allen had his fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Utes (10-7, 1-4), who have lost four in a row and five of six to fall into last place in the Pac-12. Allen added four assists. Mikael Jantunen contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

Martin had his sixth straight 20-point game and leads the Pac-12 with 12 such games this season. Edwards, who had come off the bench in the last three games, was 5 of 6 from 3-point range and has shot 14 of 26 over the past four games after going 2-for-22 in a six-game stretch

The Sun Devils took control early in the second half, when Cherry and Edwards hit 3-pointers and Martin made a layup during a 10-2 run that turned a six-point halftime edge into a 39-25 lead.

Utah got within 49-40 on Allen's 3-pointer with about 10 minutes remaining before Edwards' fifth 3-pointer helped give the Sun Devils a 56-40 lead two minutes later. The Utes never were closer than eight thereafter. They have lost their last three games by 19, 16 and 39 points.

The Sun Devils' field goal percentage was their the second-best of the season and their 11 3-pointers were one short of a season high. Utah made 39.3 percent from the floor. Allen was 6 of 18 from the field.

Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak was called for a technical foul and ejected with 1:23 remaining after the Utes' Matt Van Komen was called for a technical foul for hanging on the rim after a dunk. Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley received a technical foul in the second half, when the Arizona State bench also was hit with one.
