Team P.E.I. rallies to beat Ontario at Ray Carter Cup

SUMMERSIDE – Team P.E.I. is in the win column at the 2017 Ray Carter Cup.

Tanner MacLean pitched a complete game for Team P.E.I. at the 2017 Ray Carter Cup on Friday night. MacLean also drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as P.E.I. rallied to edge Ontario 2-1 in a round-robin game at the Baseball Canada national 15-under championship.

After dropping 7-3 and 14-3 decisions to British Columbia and New Brunswick on Thursday’s opening day, Team P.E.I. rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a thrilling 2-1 win over Ontario. Both teams are now 1-2 (won-lost) in round-robin play at Baseball Canada’s national 15-under championship.
At Queen Elizabeth Park’s Very Important Volunteer Field on a beautiful Friday night, Tanner MacLean capped a big night by sending P.E.I. to a walk-off victory. After pitching a complete game, MacLean’s one-out single scored Jack MacKenzie with the deciding run.
Noah Dow started P.E.I.’s rally with a leadoff single, and he came around to score on an outfield error.
Ontario had taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Matteo Damico drove home Dylan Winick, who had a team-leading 2-for-3 batting summary.
MacLean, who also went 2-for-3 at the dish, displayed excellent control on the mound as he gave up no walks while allowing just four hits and one earned run. The P.E.I. southpaw recorded three strikeouts.
Cameron Papp took the pitching loss in relief of starter Adam Akhalwaya, who pitched four innings of one-hit ball.
P.E.I. concludes round-robin play against Quebec (3-0) on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
