Max Stassi drove in the Angels' first three runs with a pair of homers as part of a four-hit game and Griffin Channing held the Padres to one run on two hits over six innings Tuesday night as Los Angeles scored a 4-2 victory at San Diego.
Both of Stassi's homers came off Zach Davies (7-4) as the Padres took their fourth loss in the past six games to fall to 34-21. The Angels are 25-31 and have won 12 of their past 18 games.
Stassi's sixth homer of the season in the bottom of the second tied the game at 1-1. Stassi's second homer, a 409-foot drive to straightaway center, followed a two-out double by Taylor Ward into the right field corner and broke the tie in the sixth.
Channing (2-3) issued five walks and had 10 strikeouts en route to the win. He retired 11 of the last 12 Padres he faced after working out of jams in the first and third innings -- as San Diego scored a total of one run after loading the bases in both innings before Channing recorded an out.
The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the first after Trent Grisham walked, Fernando Tatis Jr. singled and Manny Machado walked to open the game. Grisham scored on Eric Hosmer's sacrifice fly to deep left. But Stassi threw out Tatis trying to steal third and Tommy Pham took a called third strike to end the inning.
Jake Cronenworth singled to open the third ahead of back-to-back walks drawn by Grisham and Tatis. But Machado bounced back to the mound and Canning initiated a home-to-first double play. Canning then struck out Hosmer.
The Angels extended their lead to 4-1 in the top of the eighth against Padres reliever Craig Stammen. Ward singled, moved to third on Stassi's fourth hit of the game and scored on Luis Rengifo's safety squeeze.
The Padres got a run back in their half of the eighth when Grisham drew a leadoff walk from reliever Felix Pena, stole second and scored on Machado's double inside the third base bag.
