SAINT JOHN, N.B. — The Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders were limited to seven hits in losing both ends of a doubleheader Saturday in Saint John, N.B.

The first-place Alpines defeated the Isles 6-1 and 4-0 to improve to 17-5 while last-place Charlottetown (5-13) has lost five straight games.

The Alpines scored four third-inning runs to break open a scoreless first game. Pete Gehle struck out six in the win while giving up five hits.

Charlottetown starter Jake Beck allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out four. Porter Smith allowed a run on three hits in an inning of relief.

Devan Thomas was 3-for-3 with an RBI for Saint John while Luc Vautour, Justin McQuade and Gehle each had two hits.

Grant Grady had a single, a double and an RBI to lead the Islanders’ offence. Taylor Larkin had a double while singles went to Logan Gallant and Nick MacPhail.

Shaun O’Toole threw a two-hitter in the second game. He struck out five.

Darcy Affleck was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks while going the distance. He struck out two.

Mark Legere went 3-for-3 to pace Saint John, which struck for single runs in the second and third innings and tacked on two more in the fourth.

Josh McDonald had a double and Jack Kraft a single to account for Charlottetown’s hits.

Charlottetown hosts the Fredericton Royals for doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday, each beginning at 2 p.m.
