Quebec prevailed over New Brunswick 2-1 in a very tight championship game of Baseball Canada’s national 15-under championship.
Quebec starting pitcher Thomas Sansregret was charged with one run on three hits and three walks while striking out 10 in 5 1/3 innings. Reliever Simon Lusignan came on to get the final five outs, strand the potential tying run at third base in the sixth inning and not allow a hit while earning the save.
Xavier Lemieux-Morissette and Jean Christophe Masson drove in first-inning runs to lead Quebec at Queen Elizabeth Park’s Very Important Volunteer (VIV) Field.
Max Grant, who has family connections to Summerside, scored New Brunswick’s first run on a passed ball in the top of the sixth inning.
Quebec completed play in the 10-team, four-day tournament 6-0 (won-lost).
In the bronze-medal game, Saskatchewan spotted Ontario a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, before roaring back with six unanswered runs en route to an 8-4 win on Legends Field.
Jayden Huis (3-3, two runs scored, RBI) paced Saskatchewan, which outhit Ontario 10-4.
In the semifinals earlier Sunday, Quebec outlasted Saskatchewan 11-9 while New Brunswick scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning to break open a close game and defeat Ontario 9-1.
Both medal games were pushed back to late starts due to two lengthy rain delays earlier in the day.
