CALGARY, Alta. — The P.E.I. Stars start play today at Canadian under-16 girls’ softball championship in Calgary.
The squad went 3-2-1 during play in the Island Female Fastpitch League this summer and compiled a 14-5 record in tournament play, which included capturing gold in three of the four events.
“The excitement level leading up to the championship has been pretty high after beating the under-19 and under-23 teams in the past few weeks,” said head coach George Drover. “Our goal this week is to finish round robin in the championship round and we will take it one game at a time from there.”
The Stars open play today at the Shouldice Athletic Park against British Columbia Team Eight and Saskatchewan Team One.
The White Rock Renegades from British Columbia are the defending champs. The Renegades, who had a three-peat in under-16 that started in O’Leary in 2013 and continued through 2015 in Calgary, have two teams in this year’s competition.
The 24-team field also includes seven more B.C. squads, four from Alberta, three each from Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan plus one from Quebec.
