CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The P.E.I. Junior Islanders are back in action this weekend in the New Brunswick Junior Baseball League after a two-week break.
The Islanders are currently tied atop the standings with the Metro Mudcats with each team sporting 3-1 records.
P.E.I. hosts the winless Fredericton Royals today in a doubleheader beginning at noon at Memorial Field.
Rookies Gabe Penalver and Eric Anderson are expected to get the starts for the Islanders, with Patrick Gallant and midget affiliate Tanner McLean also expected to see mound time.
On Sunday, the Isles head to Miramichi, N.B., to take on the Chatham Ironmen (1-4) in another doubleheader starting at noon. Nolan Hicken and Chandler Laporte will be on the hill for P.E.I. Laporte is coming off a masterful no-hitter of the Alpines two weeks ago in Saint John, N.B.
The Islanders have been clicking offensively in the early going.
Outfielder Connor McGregor leads the circuit with a sizzling .714 batting average, going 10-for-14 in the first four games. John Savidant (.615) and Ryne MacIsaac (.500) are also in the league’s top five. P.E.I. will be without a key cog in their lineup, as infielder Josh Myers has accepted an invitation to play in a summer collegiate league in New York for the summer. It is hoped Myers will be back for the final games of the New Brunswick League schedule.
