SUMMERSIDE – Team P.E.I. had a very respectable performance against a perennial powerhouse at the 2018 Ray Carter Cup on Thursday night.

The Island squad dropped a 6-4 decision to British Columbia at the Baseball Canada 15-under national championship in Oshawa, Ont.
British Columbia scored twice in the first two innings to take an early lead. The score remained 4-0 until P.E.I. rallied to tie the game with four runs in the top of the sixth inning. B.C., however, answered with a deuce in the bottom half of the inning to close out the scoring.
Jacob Dunn, Tanner MacLean, losing pitcher Jackson Sherren, Michael McRae, Sam Worth and Tyler Jones all had hits for P.E.I. Dunn, MacLean, Sherren and Connor Ellsworth drove in runs.
P.E.I., which lost 8-1 to Quebec on Thursday morning, fell to 0-2 (won-lost), and was scheduled to meet Manitoba on Friday night and Ontario on Saturday in its final two round-robin games.

Under-16 girls
In Bedford, N.S., P.E.I. fell to 0-2 after a 19-1 loss to Nova Scotia Team Two in the 16-under girls’ invitational event.
Nova Scotia exploded for 11 runs in the top of the second inning to open up a 13-1 advantage.
Selena Ford drove in Hannah LeClair, who doubled, with P.E.I.’s lone run. Maria Crowley was the pitcher of record for P.E.I.
P.E.I. was scheduled to play Newfoundland and Labrador on Friday afternoon.

Under-13 boys
At the 13-under tournament in Woodstock, Ont., P.E.I. is 0-3 after two days of play. P.E.I. dropped its opener 18-4 to Quebec Grey on Thursday morning, and lost 13-1 to Ontario in an afternoon contest. Friday morning, British Columbia shut out the Island team 10-0.
British Columbia, which limited P.E.I. to just two hits, broke open a scoreless game in the third inning.
Losing pitcher Luke Coughlin and Drew Trainor recorded P.E.I.’s hits.
Against Ontario, Graysen LaPorte’s triple scored Cayle Coffin, who walked, to give P.E.I. a short-lived 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Ontario would answer back with six runs in the top of the second inning to take control.
Josh Burgess was the pitcher of record for P.E.I.
P.E.I. plays Manitoba early Saturday afternoon.
