SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — New Brunswick staged two late rallies to outscore the P.E.I. Youth Selects 10-9 in a back-and-forth seventh-place game at the Canada Cup Canadian under-17 baseball championship on Sunday evening.
The Youth Selects completed play in the five-day national championship with an overall record of 3-3 (won-lost) in Regina, Sask.
A double by Owen Lohnes capped a four-run New Brunswick rally in the bottom of the eighth inning after P.E.I. had taken a 9-6 lead in the top half of the frame. New Brunswick also trailed 6-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but rallied for two runs to force extra innings.
Duncan Picketts (2-3, run scored, run batted in) and Jack MacKenzie (2-4, two runs scored, two RBI) were the top batters for the Selects.
Connor Ellsworth took the pitching loss in relief of starter Tyler Taylor, who worked the first 6 1/3 innings.
Nova Scotia edged Ontario 3-2 in the gold-medal game Sunday night.
