Islanders, Royals split doubleheader Saturday

Teams will play Sunday in Summerside

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. —

Jack Kraft won his first start as a member of the Charlottetown Gaudet’s Auto Body Islanders Saturday as the home side split a doubleheader with the visiting Fredericton Royals.

The American lefty went the distance in Game 2, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks while striking out seven in a 6-2 victory. He also had a home run, a single, a walk, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.

American shortstop Kody Matthews had a home run, was hit by a pitch, drove in two runs and scored twice in New Brunswick Senior Baseball League play at Memorial Field.

Grant Grady, Taylor Larkin, Morgan Murphy and Jesse MacIntyre each had a single in the victory.

The Islanders scored deuces in the second, third and fifth innings while Fredericton got single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Dave Crossman had a home run, walked twice and scored two runs to lead the Royals while Mike Washburn went 2-for-4.  Tanner Banks, Corey Kavanaugh and Mackenzie Washburn each had a single.

Shawn Reid took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits in five innings. He struck out one and walked one. Sam Morehouse pitched a perfect inning of relief.

The Royals won the opener 4-0 in a game that was scoreless through five innings.

Crossman hit a solo shot over the left-field fence to give the Royals a 1-0 lead in the sixth and they added three more in the seventh.

Crossman added three singles while going 4-for-4 in the game while Dave Barr was 3-for-4. Both Washburns had a double while Kavanaugh went 2-for-4 and Corey Wood singled.

Larkin had a triple for the Islanders while Matthews and Kraft had singles.

Ben Runyon struck out three and walked one in a three-hit shutout.

Jordan Stevenson allowed four runs (two of them unearned) on 12 hits and two walks while striking out six.

The Islanders (6-14) and Royals (7-9) play Sunday at 2 p.m. at Legends Field in Summerside. Jake Beck is expected to start Game 1.
