A two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning by winning pitcher Josh Cleggett tied the game, and Dylan Edmands of Regina launched a mammoth grand slam that easily cleared the right-field fence on Queen Elizabeth Park’s Very Important Volunteer (VIV) Field to give Saskatchewan a wild 10-7 win over Alberta.
“I was just looking for a pitch I could hit, he threw a pretty good one and I put a good swing on it,” said Edmands, who admitted he was guessing a fastball.
It was the second extra-inning win of Day 2 for Saskatchewan at the Baseball Canada 15-under national championship. They also defeated Nova Scotia 13-6 in a morning contest.
Saskatchewan scored a single run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game 4-4, and force extra innings, and then exploded for nine runs in the top of the eighth.
Brody Alexandre drove in four runs, and Jayen Huis plated three to lead Saskatchewan offensively.
The results leave Saskatchewan in first place in Pool B at 3-0 (won-lost). Team Quebec, which trimmed New Brunswick 12-1 in a six-inning afternoon game, sports an identical record atop Pool B.
“We are playing some great baseball,” said Quebec head coach Jean-Francois Delisle. “Everything is going well at offence, our pitching is going really, really good and our defence is solid too. It’s a great way to start a tournament 3-0.”
Jeremy Therien (3-4, two runs scored, RBI) and Nicholas Deschamps (2-2, two walks, four runs scored and two runs batted in) led Quebec against New Brunswick.
Round-robin play concludes on Saturday afternoon, with the playoff round scheduled to start that evening.
