CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The P.E.I. Eagles took care of business on Day 1 of the Eastern Canadian under-19 girls’ softball championship in Charlottetown.
The Eagles started the day with a 2-1 win over Ontario and ended it with a 6-4 victory over the Fredericton Twins at the eight-team tournament at the Central Field complex.
P.E.I. scored four runs in the bottom of the first against Fredericton and never looked back.
Lila Willdey went 2-for-3 to pace the offence for the home side against Fredericton while Emily Reynolds earned the win and her sister, Margaret Reynolds, recorded the save.
Lila Mitchell hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning against Ontario to break a 1-1 tie.
Left-fielder Kenzie Arsenault made a game-changing catch in the top of the inning, running down a ball in the gap and throwing to second for one of the Island squad’s three double plays in the game.
Sydney Halliwell went 3-for-3 and threw a complete-game three-hitter. Arsenault went 1-for-2 at the plate.
The Eagles play Nova Scotia at noon today with the playoff beginning at 4 p.m. The championship is slated for Sunday at 4 p.m. at Central Field One.
