Akinsola gets P.E.I. F.C. off to quick start

Island teams go 3-5 in weekend play against Nova Scotia squads

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – P.E.I. F.C. swept a pair of weekend games from Suburban F.C. in Nova Scotia Soccer League’s under-15 boys’ action at UPEI.

The home squad won 3-0 on Saturday and 5-1 on Sunday.

Sam Akinsola scored for P.E.I. in the first minute of Saturday’s game. The Island boys had control for the first half and Akinsola got his second goal just before the halftime whistle.

P.E.I. F.C. saw some pressure in the second half, but a strong defensive line kept the ball from getting through. Julien Jones got the third goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 54th minute. Nolan Barry got the shutout. 

Sam Akinsola again gave P.E.I. F.C. the early lead on Sunday, scoring three minutes in. Riad Jaha headed the ball into the back of the net off of a corner kick from Andrew Stewart to give the Island squad a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The second half started with swift goal from P.E.I.’s Luca LeClair. There was more action in the P.E.I. end but with great ball movement the home squad got its fourth goal from Stewart. Suburban had some chances and Aiden Denis got one through the pipes. Jaha rounded out the scoring with his second of the game.

Under-15 Girls

P.E.I. F.C.’s dropped a pair of 3-1 decisions to Suburban F.C. in under-15 girls action at UPEI.

Brenna Kennedy with two and a single from Emma Crowe had Suburban FC up 3-1 at the half on Saturday.

Paige MacLean had the host squad's goal.

In Sunday’s rematch, Grace Sommers led the way with two goals in the first half after Emily MacInnis had given P.E.I. a lead eight minutes into the game. A single from Kennedy sealed the victory for Suburban.

Under-17 Boys

Suburban F.C. scored a pair of victories in under-17 boys action with Scott Firth scoring a pair of goals on free kicks.

He scored the winner in the last minute of Saturday’s game with a free kick into the top corner.

Liam Kelly and James Spence had given Suburban a 2-0 halftime lead before P.E.I. came back in the second half to tie the game with goals from Elias Bitar and Reid Peardon.

Firth scored the first goal in Sunday’s rematch from another free kick in the fifth minute.

Fawaz Yari scored twice before the break to give the visitors a 3-0 halftime lead.

Colin Curran and Roan Saengmeng pulled a couple back before Suburban’s Cole Hunter sealed the 4-2 win.

Under-17 Girls

P.E.I. F.C.’s under-17 girls squad split road games with Valley United in New Minas, N.S.

Valley won the opener 2-1 behind two goals by Olivia Rappoldt.

Rappoldt and F.C.’s Caitlyn McCloskey traded first half goals with Rappoldt scoring the winner with five minutes remaining.

On Sunday, Hannah Stoddard opened the scoring for Valley, but Maddy Neale tied it in the 29th minute. A P.E.I. F.C. own goal had Valley up for only a minute as Neale struck for her second of the game to go into halftime tied 2-2.

Braylan MacEachern scored the winner early in the second half for the 3-2 victory.
